<image:title>Blog - Grow your own cut flower garden - Direct sow or sow into pots first</image:title>
<image:caption>I always sow into plug trays, pots or soil blocks, rather than direct into the beds where the plants will grow. I like to see whether something germinates first – and if it doesn’t, I can try again. I also don’t need to worry about mistaking my plant for a weed as it’s growing. If you have a greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame, you can give your seeds a head start in there. If not, the clear, plastic crates you can buy pretty cheaply, also work really well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grow your own cut flower garden - Mint</image:title>
<image:caption>Classification: Perennial herb. Flower type: Fast growing and prolific foliage that gives bouquets a lovely fresh scent. Many people worry about mint spreading, but as I’m always cutting it, I haven’t found this an issue. Sowing: OK, I lied, mint can be tricky to germinate so buy as a small plant. They’re not expensive. Spacing: Space about 30cm apart. For a 1m2 space, you’ll fit 4-12 plants. Harvest: As soon as stems are long enough. Vase life: Long vase life of 7-14 days. Recommended varieties: I love Apple Mint that seems to grow fastest and tallest. Pineapple mint is a beautiful variegated variety, but can be too short, or floppy when longer.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grow your own cut flower garden - Persian Cress</image:title>
<image:caption>Classification: Hardy annual. Flower type: I count this as foliage and it’s prolific. Sowing: Sow onto surface of moist soil, raked to a fine tilth. Cover lightly with compost. For a 1m2 space sow 36 seeds. Spacing: Space 15cm apart. Tie them to a bamboo stake as they grow. Harvest: When most of the stems have developed seedpods. Also good for drying. <image:caption>Classification: Half hardy annual. Flower type: A filler that brings a lovely airy feel to bouquets. Sowing: Sow onto moist soil, raked to a fine tilth and over with sprinkling of soil/compost. For a 1m2 space, sow 4-12 seeds. Spacing: Space about 30cm apart. When they get about 30cm tall, pinch the tops out so you get more flower stems. Tie to a bamboo stake. Harvest: Harvest just as buds are about to open. Vase life: 5-7 days. You also need to stay on top of dead heading. Recommended varieties: I love Purity which is white, has bigger flowers and goes with pretty much everything.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Classification: Half hardy annual. Flower type: Another lovely filler with clusters of flat-faced flowers. Sowing: This one is also tricky as it will only germinate in the dark. Sow 1.5cm deep covered with soil, or just buy as seedlings or 9cm pots. For a 1m2 space, sow 20 seeds. Spacing: Space about 22cm apart. Harvest: When there are buds on the stems still to open. Vase life: Long vase life of 7-10 days. Recommended varieties: Crème brulee or Cherry Caramel because they go with loads of things.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Classification: Perennial although some people grow it as a hardy annual. Flower type: A filler with lots of tiny daisy-like flower clusters. Sowing: Sow onto moist soil, raked to a fine tilth. Pinch out the growing tip to create a bushier plant. For a 1m2 space, sow 20 seeds. Spacing: Space about 22cm apart. Harvest: When flowers are fully open. Vase life: Medium vase life of 7-10 days. Recommended varieties: I like Tanacetum Snowball. Avoid tetra white; it looks nice in the pictures, but the flowers are actually more a dirty grey.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Classification: Perennial. You’ll need to dig these up after the first frost, or mulch heavily to see them through a harsh winter. Flower type: Just a truly magnificent focal flower. Looks lovely with other flowers, but almost better alone. Sowing: Buy as tubers. For the space, you’ll only have room for two. Dig hole for and bury tuber so just the stem is visible. Give a light water and, until established, only water if very dry. When they have four to five pairs of leaves, pinch out their growing tips to create more flower stems. You’ll need to dig these up again after the first frost, or mulch heavily to see them through a harsh winter. Spacing: Space 40-50cm apart. Harvest: When just fully open – they won’t open further in the vase. Vase life: Short vase life of 3-7 days. Pom pom, ball, decorative and waterlily last longer than the dinner plate varieties. Recommended varieties: White Onesta (White), Wine Eyed Jill (Cream, peach or yellow with a dark red centre) and Sandra (bright pink). All prolific flowerers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I can’t bring myself to talk about Christmas until at least after Halloween, so it felt very weird to be making festive wreaths and Christmas table arrangements for Gastro Nick’s deli pop-up market on 3 November. I’m hoping people will pre-order for collection and delivery in December. They’re up on the website now and I’ll do some promotion on social media. Incidentally Gastro Nicks have some beautifully-packaged Italian panettone, and do some wonderful hampers, if you’re after Christmas gift ideas.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We’re thrilled to be partnering with Bluestone Vineyards this year to run both festive wreath making and Christmas table arrangement workshops. Bundles of foliage to play with, great company, bubbles, and a festive mini platter all make for a fantastic few hours. I only hope we get lots of bookings. Wherever possible we use our own, locally-grown and British foliage. Where this runs short or isn’t available, we have to resort to imports, but try to keep this to a minimum. All foliage seems to have gone up in price considerably this year so I’ll be trying to balance making sure I order enough while trying not to waste any. You can book on the website: Wreath workshops Table arrangement workshops I hope to see some of you there.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - October 2024 - A few tense nights</image:title>
<image:caption>Usually, I can confidently say we’ll have dahlias until mid-October at least. This year, that was looking precarious when we had a couple of frosts at the end of September. Frankly, I can’t afford the flower season to end that early, so it meant putting 75 metres of frost cloth out overnight. Now here we are into November and the dahlias are still going strong.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - October 2024 - Last summer market</image:title>
<image:caption>We did our last Hampshire Farmer’s Market with our locally-grown flowers at Romsey at the start of October. These have been so much fun. The other stallholders are really supportive and the customers really lovely. Inevitably, by this one, we’ve really honed our organisation to make it as efficient as possible, and will probably have forgetten it all by next year. We are doing the December markets though on 1st and 22nd. These will be all about the wreaths and Christmas arrangements. And we plan to be back at Romsey again in 2025 on the first Sunday of the month from July through to October. We’re also adding Alresford on the third Sunday of the month.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - October 2024 - The big clear up continues</image:title>
<image:caption>Whenever we have a free moment, we clear a few more beds. Anything not cleared before it gets too cold will get left until the spring. It’s good for the birds and the bees and it does no harm for the plants to die down and act as mulch for a few months. I only do some now to plant and try and reduce the workload next spring.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - October 2024 - Chrysanthemum trial</image:title>
<image:caption>More of the late chrysanthemums we’re trialling in the polytunnel are flowering now. I wasn’t disciplined enough over the labelling so each one is a surprise. On the up side, they are helping to extend the season. On the downside, I definitely don’t think I fertilised enough. I should have disbuddded them to get just one larger flower per stem. And there are only really two of the varieties I grew that I liked: Tula (spiky purple, maroon and green ) and Lola Green (zesty green balls). Every day’s a school day.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - October 2024 - Dried flower arrangements</image:title>
<image:caption>To have something else to sell out of season, I tried drying flowers this year. I started in the shed which was a disaster. A leaky roof and cool nighttime temperatures kept things perpetually damp and meant nothing dried out properly. After a moment of genius, I moved the willow obelisk I made into the pare bedroom and hung the flowers off that to dry, which worked fantastically well. Now the problem is I have boxes of dried flowers taking up all the room in my office, waiting for me to find a few moments to do something with them. Watch this space.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - October 2024 - Tulips again</image:title>
<image:caption>Every year I say I’m not going to plant tulips. The bulbs I like are expensive. Even if I manage to save them from the squirrels, rabbits and rats, I can lose the lot to tulip blight. They bloom before the main flower season starts - and normally whenever I’m away from home - which makes them harder to market. And people expect to pay supermarket prices which just isn’t viable for a small grower. Yet here I am again planting tulip bulbs (a little earlier than usual which I hope isn’t a mistake). They’re just too pretty at the end of a long winter to resist.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - October 2024 - Finally planted the hedge</image:title>
<image:caption>I meant to plant this hedging last year so we can eventually remove the wind break mesh, but only just got around to it. The Woodland Trust has some great subsidised native hedgerow packs, albeit more for the wildlife than for foliage. I think catching up with jobs that should have been done well before now will be a recurring theme over the next few months.</image:caption>

As my brother-in-law, George, says, creative pursuits are often a lifestyle choice, rather than a profitable one. That said, we’ll expand again next year to benefit from more scale, and diversify a little more – perhaps run some workshops, do more with dried flowers in the winter, and maybe even do some wedding flowers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>People do not want to pay a lot for flowers and can’t possibly see how much work there is behind the scenes to produce the flowers that make a bouquet. A farmer’s market means four hours picking, four hours arranging, and seven hours selling. <image:caption>One huge benefit of having a flower farm, that we didn’t expect, is the tremendous sense of community we get from people who buy from us. We are meeting some lovely people, who I’m sure will become firm friends over time. And. this month, for the first time, it felt like we were also getting a good balance of customers. As usual, we had a stall at the Hampshire Farmer’s Market at Romsey on the first Sunday of the month. It is so lovely to have people come back and buy flowers because they loved them so much the last time. We obviously feel the importance of buying local much more keenly now and are very appreciative of people who do so.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - August 2024 - Supplying the local deli</image:title>
<image:caption>Staying on the local note, we also started supplying bouquets and jam jar flowers to Gastro Nicks deli in Collingbourne Ducis. Behind every independent business there are usually lovely owners working extremely hard behind the scenes to try and make their business a success. Nick and Jane at Gastro Nicks are no exception. And now they’re also trying to help us build our business. Their deli is a real gem and I do hope more and more people make the most of it. It’s easy and free to park and the shop is full of lovely things – wine, cheeses, hams, condiments, bread, and vegetables. They also do fresh fish on a Thursday, caught off Brixham the day before, and delicious wood-fired pizzas every Friday – genuinely among the best I’ve ever eaten.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We continue to have some orders direct for collection and delivery. And some regulars, especially the lovely Ruth. Everyone who comes says the flowers are wonderful and they’ll buy from us again. We just need them to tell all their friends and families to do the same!</image:caption>

<image:caption>We also provided flowers to the wonderful Milston Flower Barn. Susanne is a wedding florist who does beautiful work. It’s amazing seeing the flowers from the farm made up into the most stunning bouquets and arrangements. I also have to thank The Petal Boutique in Weyhill who regularly take mixed buckets from us. They were the very first florist to buy our flowers and we’ll be forever grateful for their early encouragement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - August 2024 - Too much or not enough</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the biggest challenges is trying to spread the workload and the harvest. If we sell too much on one day, it’s impossible for one person – me - to do all the picking, conditioning, any arranging and deliveries. But, if we don’t sell enough, we have to waste the blooms that are ready to go, and all the hard work growing them is for nothing. I’d still like to have more consistent sales and waste less. I am also passionate about ensuring great quality flowers – essential, I believe, to have any chance of competing with imported and supermarket flowers. As a result, I’m a ruthless deadheader. Only perfect blooms make the grade.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - August 2024 - Behind on weeding and clearing</image:title>
<image:caption>On the practical side, we are a bit (make that very) behind on clearing beds. Some are looking downright shabby with dead or dying flowers. Every time I walk past the sweet pea trellises, that are now about ten foot tall and twenty foot wide, I wonder how I’m ever going to be able to separate the pea netting and clear it all away. But there’s an upside for the birds and the bees, so I’m not stressing too much over it. Weeding always seems to be the job I convince myself can wait when there are so many other things to prioritise. But it is getting a little out of hand. Especially my pesky nemesis, the bindweed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - August 2024 - Still growing</image:title>
<image:caption>We did some more planting this month. Some perennials. We are gradually growing more of these. They come back year after year, so we can rely on them. And they’re less work than the annuals. A bit of experimentation too. We’re always trying to extend the season by getting more flowers later in the year. So I’ve sowed some sunflowers that are supposed to flower in 45 days. We’ll see. The chrysanthemums have also been potted up in the polytunnel. While the flowers are great on the earlier ones that have flowered, I’m only getting three stems per plant. I expected them to be bushier. I need to read up, but suspect I should have fed them more. And we had one very unusual mutant.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - August 2024 - A great accomplishment</image:title>
<image:caption>The lisianthus are also flowering now. Growing these from seed is one of my greatest accomplishments as they are notoriously difficult to germinate and super slow to grow. These are from seeds I sowed way, way back in January so you need a lot of patience. I just wish I’d grown more now.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - August 2024 - Best news of all</image:title>
<image:caption>Roger continues to provide much-needed support. He’s determined not to let his cancer diagnosis change things too much so is still working harder than he should both at his full time job and in the garden. He is the mower and strimmer on the flower farm – that needs doing very regularly over the summer and gets much more onerous with every expansion. In our quest to become self-reliant on compost, he has also made yet another large compost bay. That said, I think the cumulative effect of all the chemotherapy is taking its toll, as he’s very tired all of the time. We were very keen to hear the results of his post chemo scan and this brings me to the main reason that August was brilliant – the cancer in the lymph nodes has shrunk so much it’s barely visible and he’ll now have radiotherapy to have another go at the prostate.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - August 2024 - Planning for next year</image:title>
<image:caption>Heading into September, we’re about to sow the hardy annuals for next year. Each year, we refine our growing plans – effectively how much of what we’ll grow and when. And each year, we get a little more confident we’re getting more things right. So flowers and foliage that we’re sticking with are achillea/yarrow, agrostemma, alchmilla mollis, alstromeria, anemones, astrantia, chrysanthemums, cosmos, dahlias, delphiniums, echinacea, euchalyptus, feverfew, helichrysum, hesperis sweet rocket, limonium/statice, lisianthus, mint, monarda, nigella, oregano, orlaya, persian cress, penstemon, phlox, ranunculua, raspberry greens, rosemary, salvia, scabiosa perfecta, sedum, snapdragons, stocks, sunflowers, sweet peas, sweet williams and zinnias.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - August 2024 - Flowers we’re ditching</image:title>
<image:caption>Flowers we’re ditching are Chinese forget me nots and annual artimesia - they both look too floppy. Limonium pink pokers, foxgloves and ammi – I just find them too hard to arrange into bouquets. Gypsophila – still feels a bit old-fashioned and some have sticky stems. I’m also digging up the Gaura. It takes up about five metres of bed and I use very few stems. For the first time I won’t be planting tulips. I think. I love the doubles but the bulbs are super expensive . They’re also hard to sell when the bloom is still closed and they look like every other tulip. It’s impossible to predict when they’ll flower, except that it tends to be when I least want them to. And people only want to pay supermarket prices. That said, I have a few months yet to change my mind. One new addition will be bells of Ireland. I’m sure there will be more as I browse through the catalogues.</image:caption>

After removing the tarp and laying the cardboard, I ran out of time and was away the next day. <image:caption>Roger kindly took on the irrigation chore, which just left me to burn holes and lay the weed fabrc we lay on top of the beds. Then in went the next succession of seedlings – achillea / yarrow, antirrhinum / snapdragons, Chinese forget-me-nots, dianthus / sweet william, feverfew, gypsophila, limonium / statice, monarda, safflower and hundreds of zinnias. Next season, it will hopefully just be a case of mulching the beds over winter and adding a little home-made compost before planting again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Sweet peas like never before</image:title>
<image:caption>The flowers are coming thick and fast now. Our sweet peas are amazing this year – we’re getting stem lengths of 50cm on some varieties and I can pick morning and night. Variety is definitely one factor. Spencer types grow much longer stems, and I guess the cool weather and all the rain has helped.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Super-tall Ammi</image:title>
<image:caption>The autumn-sown Ammi is also doing really well - a good seven foot tall and bushy. I’m still on the fence about it as a cut flower though. I find one head is often going over before the other heads are ready, and it’s tricky to arrange with – probably best suited to the bigger bouquets and arrangements. The ranunculus we pre-sprouted and planted outside under frost cloth at the end of March, started to flower and continued through to mid- June, when it started getting a bit too hot for them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Scabiosa perfecta blue is flowering and one of my top flowers. Such a pretty form and colour. My mystery monster flower also turned out to be a giant scabious with pale yellow flowers. My plant app identified it as a weed, but I was curious how it would turn out so left it. Very glad I did.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Cosmos getting into its stride</image:title>
<image:caption>The cosmos started worryingly small, and by the end of the month has really come on. It brings a lovely airy feel to bouquets but it’s a challenge to keep up with the dead-heading. Variety wise, the white Purity is still a firm favourite and I’m also loving the small, pale yellow Xanthos - not so keen on the maroon Rubenza. Achillea (yarrow) and limonium (statice) are ‘must grow’ flowers. They come in a load of pretty colours and are easy to grow – and if you don’t use them, you can dry them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - New this year</image:title>
<image:caption>New to me this year was Limonium pink pokers and it’s definitely a keeper. Also new is gypsophila – both white and rose. The good news it grows easily and is prolific, but the pink variety has very sticky stems and the white, even with the bigger flowers, feels a bit old-fashioned, so I don’t think I’ll grow it again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Sunflower experiment continues</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m experimenting with sunflowers this year, growing them two seeds to a plug cell and/or planting them close together – around 15cm / 6 inches apart – to get thinner stems and smaller flower heads. Interestingly, I think they are thinner and the flower heads are a good bouquet size, but they still grow really tall. And the odd one turns out to be enormous – and branches; the ones we get are not supposed to do that.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Mixed sunflower bunches</image:title>
<image:caption>I love the varieties though – Procut white nite particularly, which has beautiful pale yellow petals. And Sunfill. This one is really grown for foliage with it’s really interesting calyx – but I like the flowers with the short petals too. Combined with the Procut plum, they make for a really lovely mixed bouquet. I was sowing seeds every week or so, which meant I had a lot to plant out in June.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Aiming for winter chrysanthemums</image:title>
<image:caption>To extend the season out beyond October, we’re growing late chrysanthemums. My thinking is to grow them outside in pots until the frost comes and them move them into the polytunnel – maybe adding some artificial light when the days get shorter. I got them as small plugs in June, and planted them up into 9cm pots, then again into 27cm pots which I quickly ran out of, so had to resort to 3 and 2 litre pots instead for now.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Building the business</image:title>
<image:caption>A lovely customer said we must be living the dream running a flower farm. We hope to be, one day. Don’t get us wrong, we love working outdoors, and seeing the results of all the planning, sowing and growing come to fruition with beautiful flowers. But it’s 90% hard graft and 10% fun with flowers. And selling is a constant challenge. Everyone says you should only grow flowers when you’ve sold them. That’s very easy to say and much harder to do in practice. People want to see what you’re selling before making any commitment to buy. This year, we’re doing Romsey Market on the first Sunday of the first full week each month, and are growing to ensure we have the volumes for that. But it’s a small, friendly market, and not super busy, so not a huge money maker.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Offering wholesale to florists</image:title>
<image:caption>That leaves us trying to sell the flowers inbetween wholesale to florists or direct to customers. For the florists, we have to compete with wholesalers who can provide and deliver pretty much anything, at any quantity, and generally at a lower cost. Florists are too busy to hunt around different websites, collate small quantities and collect flowers themselves. And their margins are tight enough without paying more. Also, for many, British-grown flowers are a risk they have not been prepared to take to date. A few growers from the south west have come together to create a hub (see https://www.instagram.com/swflowergrowercollective). Florists can order via one website supplied by multiple growers, collect from one location or take one delivery. I’m sure it’s the way to go, but will inevitably take a while to get established.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Selling direct</image:title>
<image:caption>We’re finding selling direct to customers is also a challenge. We don’t have a shop that people see, we don’t think the neighbours would relish a stall at the end of the lane, or lots of people arriving each day to ‘pick your own’. Social media is obviously a great option, but it’s just so hard to get a profile amongst the millions of other posts out there. We are getting some customers direct, but would like a lot more so need to work harder at that.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - Yet another new challenge</image:title>
<image:caption>This year, so far, we’ve battled with the weather, mice, rabbits, slugs, snails and aphids – with varying degrees of success. The pansies were the one flower that reliably battled through everything unscathed – until something decided to sleep on them. Reminiscent of the three bears story, they’ve tried every pot. Turns out it’s the wood pigeons. They sit there, munching away, getting dinner, bed and breakfast. Oh well. What we do is also about creating a diverse habitat for wildlife, so I can’t really complain. Onwards and upwards.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - June 2024 - A break in July</image:title>
<image:caption>We’re celebrating an important medical milestone in July. Roger finishes his last round of chemotherapy treatments and, to mark the occasion, we’re going sailing around the Ionian Islands with my brother and sister-in-law all the way from Australia. He’s done amazingly well throughout and very much deserves a holiday. It’s obviously not great for business, I’m very worried about leaving the flowers, and can already see the bind weed rubbing its hands with glee in anticipation of taking over. But, there is nothing more important than family and health.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Everything growing like mad</image:title>
<image:caption>The hesperis sweet rocket, foxgloves, irises and poppies put on a fabulous show to get things going. The beautiful ranunculus start flowering. And the first sunflowers are a few weeks off blooming. As are the sweet williams - which feels a bit late this year. Nigella comes into bloom with its unique blue flowers. It’s not thriving for us this year, but is just an astounding spring flower. The sweet peas seem to grow by about a foot each day. They are the best they’ve ever been this year. Grown alongside the stocks, the smell is amazing. It’s been fantastic to see this year’s first few bouquets out the door. While we weren’t officially open in May, a few people messaged us with special requests for orders and arrangements. This included a sympathy basket - it’s always an absolute privilege to be trusted with something so important.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Eucalyptus experiment pays off</image:title>
<image:caption>And some good news. We grew some eucalyptus from seed last year as an experiment. We left them in pots to see if they’d survive the winter and amazingly they did, so they’ll get planted out as soon as we have time. We borrowed an augur to dig the holes (thanks Barry) - what a time-saver - but then got diverted onto other priorities so they’re still waiting to go in. Irony of ironies, with all the money we invest in the flower farm, my £3.50 pansies are looking fabulous.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Finally got some plants in the ground</image:title>
<image:caption>We got a lot more of our the seedlings we’ve grown into beds. Limonium (statice), achillea (yarrow), anthirrhinum (snapdragons), gypsophila, feverfew, artemiesia, bladder campion, calendula, chinese forget me nots, clarkia appleblossom, cosmos, matricara (chamomile), phlox, safflower, scabiosa and zinnias.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Investing in more flower beds</image:title>
<image:caption>We’re extending again, creating another four new beds in the new section we wind-breaked off. This meant moving the tarpaulin that’s been in place since January further along the field. This kills most of the weeds except bindweed which I have to go through and pull up by the handful. All our beds are no dig, so we then lay a layer of cardboard - we use pallet sheets - and then add compost on top and plant into that. It’s a challenge to get the cardboard down and bags on top to weight it down before the wind catches it and blows it away. By the time we’ve done a few beds, we’ve hefted hundreds of bags back and forth. And because they’ve been weighting down, the tarp, they’re extremely wet and heavy. Each 25 metre bed takes about 75 cardboard sheets and 40 bags of 40 litre compost. It’s obviously an investment and, scarily, will take an awful lot of flower sales to pay back.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/65252f4dab32d918879bc73c/7a33826a-152a-42cd-848d-ecab91543544/IMG_1295.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Irrigation and weedcloth</image:title>
<image:caption>We then lay irrigation. Normally three lines of drip tape per bed connected to 16mm supply pipe connected to a tank or the mains. We use screw connectors because they’re more robust and secure than the barbed ones. My top tip is to have a thermos cup of boiling water handy to soften the pipes before pushing them onto a connector. See the article on irrigation for more. And finally for most plants (but not ranunculus, dahlias or sunflowers), we burn holes in weed cloth and pop that over the bed. I don’t like using the plastic, but with one person just can’t keep on top of the weeds without it, and it is reused year after year.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Dahlias go in</image:title>
<image:caption>We planted dahlias out in three of the four beds. I think there are around 180 in all - and another 20 or so we don’t have room for. We pre sprout all our dahlias. We start with the first batch around 1 May and keep them in the house. In mid May, a couple of weeks after the last frost date, we do the rest in pots and leave them outside. We could plant those straight into beds, but slug control is easier in the pots and I like to see them sprout before going to the effort of planting them. They’re looking pretty happy so far in their new home and we’re managing to keep the slugs at bay. There are thousands of those this year. When you look in the garden at night, it’s like a big slug rave out there. Seedlings went into the final bed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Polytunnel still full</image:title>
<image:caption>May is also a big seed sowing month. We continue sowing hardy annuals and then also sow tender annuals like phlox and zinnias. In the polytunnel. as the ranunculus die down, we replace them with lisianthus. Always a gamble - they can be a little temperamental. We still start all our seedlings in there for a few weeks before hardening them off and then growing them on outside. We sow and grow 90% of our plants ourselves, but occasionally buy in plants, if we’ve had a failure or want a bit of certainty that plants will come good, or want to get ahead of the game with perennials. We bought 12 hesperpis from Waitrose Garden Centre and all but one died. My home-grown hesperis in the same bed flourished so I think it was a plant issue, not the soil or conditions. I emailed them - twice - and they didn’t reply. I shan’t be using them again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Sunflower experiment</image:title>
<image:caption>We’re experimenting with sunflowers this year to try and fill the focal flower gap between ranunculus and dahlias. I’m hoping by planting them really close together, and sowing two seeds to a plug cell, they’ll grow shorter with thinner stems and smaller flower heads. It’s mostly the pollenless Procut varieties - white nite and plum, and there’s a variety called Sunfill green that makes great foliage too. So we’re sowing a few hundred sunflower seeds every week or so.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Our first market</image:title>
<image:caption>We did Romsey market for the first time on 2 June and are there the first Sunday of the first full week every month now. The first market is always going to be very stressful. Imagine how disapointing it would be if you didn’t sell anything. It’s right next door to Waitrose, and while imported supermarket flowers are notihng like locally-grown and can’t compete on freshness, scent and sustainability, you worry people will compare the price. We were hoping for a sunny day - no one wanders around a market in the rain. Then at 22 degrees, it looked like it would be too sunny and everyone would go somewhere else for the day, or the flowers would wilt. But they held up really well. In fact a leftover bunch I kept looked as fresh the following day despite being out all morning then left in the hot Landrover all afternoon while we had a pub lunch with my relatives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Spending the profits</image:title>
<image:caption>Roger was amazing in helping us get ready. He repaired a rotten step ladder I bought on Ebay, made boxes to transport and display the buckets of bouquets, and made a shelf for the Landrover so we could put the tables underneath and flowers on top. Despite it being his birthday, he came along with no complaints on market day. He does however have a tendency to spend our profits on other stalls and their lovely wares. In the end, we did OK. The market was great fun and both other stallholders and customers were all really supportive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Roger’s brother George is a very talented wood turner. He provided some hand-turned twine holders meticulously crafted in mahogany and we added a 130 metre ball of Nutscene twine and scissors to make it into a gift. The label explains that is made by Butterwood from a small rural studio in Wiltshire. He also provided some seed sowing dibbers, some with markings to reflect the most popular seed sowing depths, and some just in inches. We’re now selling these at the market and on the website.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - The unglamorous side of flower farming</image:title>
<image:caption>Behind every beautiful bouquet is an unglamorous side of flower farming. Bindweed is our nemisis. Despite laying tarp for six months, it still hangs on. The sun and rain create the perfect conditions for it to grow like mad. I filled buckets of the stuff almost daily and I’m barely stemming the tide. It practically grows while you’re watching it. Annoyingly, the polytunnel is showing some wear and tear after just a few years. It’s ripped along a few of the folds and just worn through in other patches. Too many to tape over. We’ll worry about how to deal with this in the autumn.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Flower farm update - May 2024 - Official opening on 9 June</image:title>
<image:caption>Once the market was done, we opened officially to retail customers on 9 June. We even have a sign on the gate. We did a bouquet giveaway to mark the occasion. One of the reasons we love growing flowers is bringing a bit of happiness to the world. It’s impossible not to smile when presented with a bunch of flowers and we were delighted to send some off to deserving people.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - We built a wormery - Worms like warm, moist conditions. They don’t like to be waterlogged or cold. Their activity apparently declines once temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius. If they’re somewhere that gets very cold, you’ll need to wrap your wormery with something to stop it freezing. Nor do they want to be in direct sun. They can smell and attract flies, so not sure you want them in the house.</image:title>

<image:caption>We bought around 60 round wooden fence stakes. At 1.8 metres, they allow mesh of 1.5m and 30 cm to bang into the ground. Roger does this manually with a post rammer. It looks, and probably is, exhausting. The posts are about £5-6 each and you need them at least every 1.5 metres.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Wind breaks and rabbit fencing</image:title>
<image:caption>You thread galvanised wire through the top and bottom of the mesh to keep it taught. I’m sure there must be a better technique for this, but we just laboriously threaded the wire through. Then you strain and staple it to the posts.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Wind breaks and rabbit fencing</image:title>
<image:caption>So we’re having to rabbit fence. This involves putting some galvanised hexagonal wire mesh under ground or along the surface towards the threat, folding it to a height of around 60cm, then securing it with straining wires top and bottom. If you lay it on the ground, you also have to bang in metal staples about every 20cm to hold it down.</image:caption>

November’s were moved from big soil blocks to 9cm pots in early December and moved out to the polytunnel, and they’re looking pretty good. I just need to keep them alive until end of April – the last frost date – and then plant them outside. January’s I put into the smaller blocks which wasn’t as successful – germination was poor, and they’re looking a bit leggy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Finding the best way to water the field - Supply pipe</image:title>
<image:caption>So, Roger dug a trench to lay the supply pipe. Nothing is ever as simple as you think. There’s a layer of soil about 15cm deep, then what feels like a solid, cement plateau. It’s actually a layer of flinty stones. We have to pull all these out so ensure they don’t puncture a pipe later on, so we’ve used them to create a new seating area. Then we found the lime tree roots stretch further than we thought. They’re too big to cut down, so Roger had to dig even deeper to get under them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Finding the best way to water the field - T-connectors</image:title>
<image:caption>Because the other end of this connector isn’t barbed, it can’t fit directly into the supply pipe. We have to insert it into a short bit of supply pipe and join that to a T-connector.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Ten ‘must grow’ fillers and foliage - Hylotelephium / Sedum</image:title>
<image:caption>Requires very little care. Lasts for weeks in a vase. Flowers later in summer and for ages, I think from August through to October. If you cut them back before the stalks get too big and unwieldy, you’ll get a second flush. But Unless you opt for the Sedum Hylotelephium Autumn Joy variety that grows to 40-50cm – a lot of the other varieties are quite short. If you don’t cut it when the stems are thin, they can grow too thick to use in bouquets. You really need to pick it before it flowers and the bees get on it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Ten ‘must grow’ fillers and foliage - Mint</image:title>
<image:caption>Fast growing and prolific – plant out in May and you’ll have foliage you can pick three months later in August. Gives bouquets a lovely fresh scent. Apple mint seems to grow fastest and tallest, and is most prolific. But Many people worry about mint spreading, but as I’m always cutting it, I haven’t found this an issue. Pineapple mint is a beautiful variegated variety, but can be too short and floppy.</image:caption>

Unusual, hairy flowers that curl over like a caterpillar. Sweetly scented. Very attractive to honey bees, bumblebees and hover flies But Self seeds very easily. For green manure, you need to cut and dig it in before it flowers.</image:caption>
